God bless you Casey. this year has been something. with your heart strings being pulled on in so many directions, how God gave you the strength to continue doing shows and writing music..taking care of business. your family values and the love and work ethic instilled in you are a wonderful tribute to your beloved PawPaw. i know you said you had a lot to say..and i know your heart must be bursting with all kinds of emotions. ..put them to music, say it in song. its your gift. may it carry you up and over. we love you and your family so much and will continue to keep all of you in prayer. Rest in peace Mr. Bill James

I put together some excerpts from my prior interviews with the James' family where they mentioned Papaw:
From BC’s interviews:
“Some of that toughness comes from their grandfather, their mom's dad, (whom he calls Paw Paw) who acted as surrogate father for the two of them after their parents divorced when he was eleven and Casey was four. Paw Paw had a great deal of influence on the James' boys. "That's where Casey and I get a lot of our old school, World War II, hard-headed, hatred of computers and most things that are modern.”
“We grew up with having pawpaw as our father figure out here, we had a healthy respect for Waylon and Willie and Merle and all the true country as opposed to the country nowadays.”
“People from Papaw's side of the family for many generations sang and played and wrote and painted -- very artistic people.”
From Casey’s interviews:
“It came down from my Papaw. He is a car enthusiast, he loves cars. Fast cars. One of the things we’d always do. My Papaw is very handy and anything that isn’t perfect he has to make it perfect and fix it. When he gets a new truck he will do certain things like take the grill out, black it out or switch it to this, …He always custom does it himself. He’s not going to a store and buying stuff. He actually does the work. And because of that, I think me and my brother we always do that to our stuff. We always personalize our stuff.”
“My Papaw and my family we’ve always played 42, it’s a Texas dominoes game. Another version called moon where you take out the count and play with three people. It’s not like a straight dominoes games where you’re linking up numbers. 42 is a great game.”
“One of the coolest memories that I ever had musically was Orange Crush. That was one of my favorite memories. We were at a family reunion. My second cousin had a tape of that song. He put it on my Papaw’s stereo and he cranked it up way, way loud and I was right in front of the speakers and I freakin’ loved it.”
Casey offered another example of a story that goes with one of his guitars. “There’s the one where my Papaw bought the pick guard for me, which was the second one … the one I played on I Don’t Want to Be.”
From Debra’s interviews:
“My dad is very, very much that way, pull yourself up by your bootstraps, and quit complaining and get on with what you need to do. Not in a harsh way. My daddy, he's the most loving, gentle soul, all my life, a very wise person, and I think he's had a tremendous impact on my life as well as my boys. Very wise, and not a complainer.”

Thank you Shari This posted on FB : The funeral was beautiful. The preacher had wonderful things to say about Billy James (Pawpaw). First, Casey gave a wonderful eulogy. Then, Billy Cole gave his eulogy. Both boys talked about the high standard their Pawpaw had set for them. Later, Debra and the 4 grandsons, Chad, Billy Cole, Casey and Spence sang and played guitar. The first was a country/ gospel sounding song, second song was Wayfaring Stranger, the next a song inspired by BC's love of his Pawpaw and feeling like he walked on water (not a dry eye in the house). My husband says there was one more of Deb's songs but I can't recall. Mr. James left 2 daughters, Debra and Sherrie,4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren (the girl was the one Casey sang to in during his last song "Daughters".) What a wonderful tribute to the man raised BC and Casey!

:)Loved the tribute to Pawpaw. You can see where the James boys get their a lot of their traits and values from.
