Lol yes it is a bit strange. But Casey doesn't have an album or country single out yet, and he also wasn't distinctly country on the show, and as American Idol is a pop thing I guess he was entered into the pop category.

(where do you get your cool little emoticoms?) But, Pop? Ai Yi Yi!! I steal them from other forums. Yes I also dont know about the pop thing, I saw they had a category of guitarist of the year, why didn't Casey get a nomination for that one? But obvious the whole pop thing purely has something to do with the whole American Idol connection. But Casey has won a award yeah!

Okay, checked it out. Yes, it's really VERY cool! I mean, "bluesy" and "international acclaim" in a Pop category review! Niiice Fort Worth Weekly POP Automorrow isn’t as qualitatively pop as the other nominees, but the pop-punk trio has a knack for hooks that’s undeniable. Even though the band’s known for constantly releasing singles digitally, the guys are hard at work on a long-awaited new album. The five guys in Exit 380, with their stately, hook-heavy rawk, are also getting ready to release a new recording, their 900th in three years. With Green River Ordinance’s recently released EP, Songs We Like from Before We Were Born, the young hometown heroes have put their patented jangly alt-pop twist on tunes as diverse as Tom Petty’s “American Girl,” The Band’s “The Weight,” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way.” Although American Idol sent Tim Halperin packing in March, the singer-songwriter had already earned national fans for his melodic, keyboard-based pop tuneage. Casey James actually cracked the American Idol top three, and while he didn’t win, he generated some sweetly hip, bluesy, audience-friendly songs to garner international acclaim. The self-proclaimed “indie-rock super duo” known as Sloan Automatic combines voice filters, electronica, and acoustic instrumentation to create a sardonic, effortlessly catchy pop vibe. –– J.F.

Thanks I didn't see that, interestingly if I read that correctly Casey has been nominated for his new songs? Then it is actually pretty cool to be nominated before the song are even out. It seems like their pop category consists of people that they dont know where else to place.

On the otherhand now that I think back to that hometown review of Casey, perhaps they just see country as pop with the whole pop/ country thing going on.

LOL! that's great! Actually , "Pop" category is not a surprise for several reasons : first off clearly the category is not about the music it's more about the "popularity" especially with nominating a semi-finalist Tim H. from idol . & also the nominees in that category are very popular local bands who are also nominated in other categories . I think this has to be more about him coming from idol ... etc. and if you look at the articles from the local papers , Casey is clearly a popular in DFW area & Tx in general . great thing to have a home support , so it's all great .

I thought Tim Haleprin was pop?
If the other people where nominated for other categories then Casey should also have been, but they properly dont want him to win so many categories. Lol
"he generated some sweetly hip, bluesy, audience-friendly songs to garner international acclaim"
It sounds more like they are talking about Casey's new songs when the word "generated" is used. But who knows, in a way pop has always stood for anything that is currently popular so yes it could make sense.

^^ Tim is soft-Rock / Folk , aka another WGWG ! LOL that description could be used for Casey's idol songs too! but as you said Pop is not a genre , it's just more a radio format for what is currently popular . Oh! well it's a local paper , not like the Grammys ! LOL

^^ Tim is soft-Rock / Folk , aka another WGWG ! LOL I thought that was pop, I dont really classify that as real rock. Then again now that I think about it, isn't this Tim a piano player? Piano playing is properly as close to pop as you are going to get. that description could be used for Casey's idol songs too! but as you said Pop is not a genre , it's just more a radio format for what is currently popular . Oh! well it's a local paper , not like the Grammys ! LOL And he won! That is the main thing, the rest is just semantics.
