I don't want to overanalyse either, just looking to get a convo going in the unpopular thread. We don't have to beat this to death just use it as a jumping off point for other topics. That's what a moderator is for, not to stop the topic but to steer it in another direction if it goes on too long. Would you like me to moderate this topic if it makes you squeamish?

How did I possibly forget this thread was here! I'm sure I can offer some unpopular opinions. I'm the one who didn't like Power of Love during AI -- boy have I gotten heat for that!

I remember when I first heard the spoiler for that night. I was like really. Ha I guess that is what he had to choose from since they yanked the theme at the last minute. And at least he sang it great. That night except for Crystal and Casey was a disaster. How did I possibly forget this thread was here! I'm sure I can offer some unpopular opinions. I'm the one who didn't like Power of Love during AI -- boy have I gotten heat for that!

That was the week it was supposed to be teen idol week. Remember that was the week they made a horrible decision an brong in Miley Cyrus to mentor. The kids were fighting over the same songs so the producers at the last minute yanked the theme and changed it. It was confirmed by some of them this happened.

can you relate to the lyrics? I think we would all properly relate differently to different songs, it properly depends a lot on your own frame of reference. For me personally I can relate with the song. While other songs like So Sweet or Lets dont call it a night feels much more superficial to me. Hm. Interesting. Casey writes a lot about regret, missed opportunities, etc.: Done Made Up My Mind, Show Me a Bridge, covering I Got Mine, all with some commonalities. 'working something through, my guess:) Maybe something to do with his newly budding spirituality, or just maturity:) What say ye? As I said above we will all properly see something different in the songs, or attach more meaning to some phrases then to others and so on. I think it would properly be really interesting to see what all of the different fans see especially in these two songs. For me personally I dont think Show me a bridge or Done made up my mind are about missed opportunities or past regrets. For me, Show me a bridge is actually a very cynical song. The "show me a bridge" for me seems to mean show me a way that this could work or a solution, or a bridge as in conquering or going over something like a hurdle. The "and I'll show you a fire" I think means destruction as in show me a way, that this could work and I'll give you a reason why it wouldn't work. The references to the past showing that he has been through this before, so he already knows what the outcome will be because he knows himself and he knows he bound to repeat his past. When it comes to it, overall for me it seems cynical, here is someone who knows exactly who and what he is, someone who's been around, and even though he cares for this person it is still not enough to change him or his way of thinking, he already knows the outcome so why go through all of the effort when it is bound to fail. But there is also a touch of thoughtfulness, he would rather hurt her now then in the long run, so he isn't totally unfeeling or without a bit of remorse, but overall it is still not enough to change him completely. Therefore I dont really see it as regret, because if it means that much and if you know yourself so well then you would atleast have given it a chance before just giving up. So for me it almost the opposite of regret as in you are feeling a bit bad about this right now, but you also know you are actually doing the right thing because of your experience. Perhaps the sadness of the song lies in the hopelessness or in the fact that someone is so cynical. I think it is actually a very interesting song. Done made up my mind, while it might also have the bridge theme in the song for me is almost the complete opposite of "Show me a bridge". While "Show me bridge seems to be a hopeless situation that one just have to accept. Done made up my mind seems to me more about not accepting things anymore or not putting up with things anymore. To me it almost feels like someone who has been trapped in a situation for a long while and they have finally decided to break free. Perhaps it could even be a victim of a situation or of another person in the process of braking free, or taking the power away from their oppressor. There is also a bit of resentment and anger towards, toward the situation or person. But evenso it is also in a way hopeful, as the person has finally decided to leave it all behind, so there is also emancipation. Both of these songs, I think deals with more darker feelings. Casey doesn't always do darker, but I personally love it when he goes for more darker songs. Both of these songs are high up on my favorite list. But then again I am sure someone else might see something completely different in these songs.

Mine was more of a definition of "burned bridges" via example. Your observations reflect some analysis - nice! I'd be curious to know if they were written in succession - the more "cynical" Show Me a Bridge before the "optimistic" Done Made Up My Mind or vice versa. Thoughts?

Boudica,
I interpreted Show Me A Bridge similar to the way you did. The part that confuses me is "People change, that’s one thing I’m countin’ on ‘Cause I’ve never wanted anything more to last, Like I want you, I want me to stay here forever, Girl I’m afraid my future can’t outrun my past". Listening to this line, it doesn't seem like he's breaking up with her.

Perhaps it was written close to each other his mother said he performed Show me a bridge for his grandfather when he was sick already in December. Perhaps that is also how the song came about, I could see someone perhaps being cynical about life when you have a family member on his death bed, while at the same time you yourself are suppose to be at a very good moment in your life.

Yeah, makes sense. I think we can both agree he has tapped some raw emotions inspiring these two particular songs, no? The grappling to come to terms with something and/or finding a satisfying resolution to a problem... Interesting your observation re being freed from an oppressor and "emancipation." I vaguely remember us kicking this idea around some time ago while Casey was on the Idol tour, over at Idolforum. You are likely onto something
